At the 2015 election, I made clear I would not accept the MP’s pay rise, so long as a 1% pay cap applied right across the rest of the public sector. Earlier this year, pay awards for police and prison officers were agreed over 1%. In Wednesday’s Budget, the Chancellor released a further statement, here, which says:
“Earlier this year, the government ended the 1% public sector pay policy. For 2018-19, Secretaries of State will be able to consider appropriate pay awards depending on workforce needs and resources”.
I kept my promise not to accept the extra salary while the 1% cap applied. Over that period, I donated £13,501 to the Elmbridge Community Fund, which supports local areas dealing with social challenges in our community.
