Today, I visited Vic Grewal who runs the franchise for Budgens convenience store, in Thames Ditton, with Ed Woodall from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS).
Vic runs a great local shop in the heart of Thames Ditton, and the Post Office counter has increased footfall significantly. Vic, Ed and I had a cup of coffee and talked through a range of issues, particularly reforms to business rates and the newly proposed deposit return scheme.
There are 66 convenience stores across Esher and Walton employing 492 staff (over half are women). So, convenience stores like Vic’s are an important source of enterprise in the community and a significant employer. This is particularly valuable in areas like Elmbridge, which is made up of a number of small towns and villages. Local stores like Vic’s help make up the character of the community – as well as providing a great service for us as consumers.
